What to do When Your Car Overheats

Imagine you’re driving through city traffic on your way to an important meeting  or better yet, heading out on a well-deserved vacation  when suddenly, your car starts acting strange. Smoke begins to rise from the hood, and you notice the temperature gauge climbing higher and higher. Your vehicle is overheating.

But why does it happen?

In this article, we’ll explore the most common causes of engine overheating and share practical tips on what to do if it happens to you while driving.

Why Does a Car Engine Overheat?

There are several possible reasons, but here are the most common ones:

  1. Low or no coolant level

  1. Broken or faulty water pump

  1. Thermostat malfunction

  1. Leaks in the cooling system

  1. Radiator blockagedirtor damage

Warning Signs That Your Car Is Overheating

Recognizing early symptoms can help you prevent serious damage. Keep an eye out for:

  • Loss of power

  • Unusual or burning smell

  • Smoke or steam coming from the hood

  • Knocking or rattling sounds

  • Temperature gauge in the red zone or warning light on

What to Do if Your Car Overheats — 5 Simple Steps

1. Turn on the heater and open the windows

It might sound counterintuitivebut turning on the heater helps draw heat away from the enginetransferring it into the cabinThis can slightly reduce engine temperature and give you time to pull over safely.

2. Pull over and turn off the engine

As soon as it’s safepull over to the side of the road and stop the vehicle.

Continuing to drive with an overheated engine can cause serious damage. If you can’t stop immediately, lower your speed and keep moving slowly so that air continues to flow through the radiator. Once you’ve stopped, switch off the engine.

3. Don’t open the hood right away — wait patiently

Avoid opening the hood while the engine is still hotSteam or boiling coolant could escape and cause burnsWait until the temperature drops completely before checking anything under the hood.

4Add coolant only once the engine is fully cool

When the engine has cooled down completelycheck the coolant levelIf it’s low and you have extra coolantslowly add more according to your vehicle’s manual.

Never attempt this while the engine is hot — it could damage the system or cause serious burns.

5Take your vehicle for inspection

Even if your car seems fine after adding coolant, don’t ignore the cause of the problem. Something triggered the overheating, and it could happen again or get worse over time. We recommend visiting your authorized Honda Jamaica dealership for a full inspection. A professional diagnosis will ensure your cooling system is working properly and help you avoid costly repairs later.
